How much are you paying for prepaid electricity in Joburg?
OUTA is running a small project to check if prepaid electricity users are charged the right prices, due to concerns about over-charging by some resellers.
We’re looking at residential prepaid electricity charges in the City of Johannesburg municipal area. This includes City Power (City of Joburg) customers and Eskom direct customers in the City of Joburg municipal area (which includes Soweto and Sandton).
Please help us by sending us copies of your receipts for prepaid residential electricity.
Take a clear picture of the full receipt and email or WhatsApp it to us (see below for contact details).
We need all the information on the receipt, including your meter number (so we can link receipts to the same meter). We don’t need your name.
Tell us if you are a City Power or Eskom customer.
Tell us if you are registered for free basic electricity.
If the seller’s name is not on the receipt, please tell us who you bought it from.
If your prepaid meter is not run by City Power or Eskom, please tell us the name of that business.
We’d like receipts from a few weeks, ideally for a full calendar month. This helps us check the charges for different usage blocks. We’ll take any receipts for prepaid residential electricity bought for City Power or Eskom direct customers in Joburg since 1 July 2019.
Send us your receipts as you buy them (or whatever you have in your records), don’t wait until the end of the month.
We’d like receipts sold directly by City Power and Eskom, and also by resellers like businesses and online sales.
We’ll compile a report on this and make this public. We won’t make the meter numbers public.
