Ramaphosa has opportunity to save SA with NPA appointment

The Pretoria High Court also ruled that because President Jacob Zuma faces possible prosecution, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is empowered to appoint the new National Presecutions Authority (NPA) boss.

“Ramaphosa has now been provided with the opportunity to remove a serious blockage in the criminal prosecution system, by placing the right person with sufficient moral courage to head up the NPA, thereby enabling the processing of many cases of corruption and maladministration of senior leaders, many of which are linked to the issue of state capture,” says Ben Theron, Chief Operating Officer at OUTA.

“It's time that the NPA was headed up by an action oriented professional who won’t be influenced with bribes, lawlessness or intimidation.”

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) congratulates the organisations which brought this case, as we know that bringing such litigation is often not easy.

OUTA recently built cases and lodged strong criminal complaints against a number of President Zuma's Government appointees (Mosebenzi Zwane, Faith Muthambi, Richard Seleke, Brian Molefe, Ben Ngubane and others), along with his friends the Guptas, his son Duduzane Zuma, “These well prepared cases currently with the Hawks and/or the NPA and we believe if acted upon, we will soon see the corrupt being held to account,” says Theron.

Wayne Duvenage, Chief Executive Officer at OUTA, says that taxpayers' contributions have been abused by those in the executive, in order to silence opponents and weaken law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

“This ruling confirms the independence of the judiciary and is the first step to once again strengthening the criminal justice system against the sinister interference in due process. OUTA would like this to be a warning to those in the executive that the power of interference is slipping away, and justice will be served,” says Duvenage.

OUTA believes that South Africa has suffered for too long from political interference in the office of the NPA and the Deputy President now has an opportunity to change that fact.
