WHAT ARE THE ISSUES AND PROJECTS WE ARE WORKING ON?

Project WEM-01: Lack of Transparency and access to information:

The Water Services Act compels the Minister to maintain a National Water Service Information System and to regulate and monitor the performance of all water services institutions. To date, there is a lack of updates to the pertinent information required for society to ensure or be comfortable that Government is doing its work to the levels and standards expected of it.

We believe it is essential that all relevant information regarding water supply, quality and sanitation management should be transparently and timeously available to society. By doing so, trends, shortfalls, maladministration and potential corruption can be identified and challenged by society, if and when the authorities have not displayed their best intentions to rectify concerning situations.

The DWS has in the past made these reports available to the public, however it now appears that this valuable information is now being confined to DWS regional offices and municipalities. We believe this lack of transparency to the public and civil society is unacceptable and disempowers society’s ability to hold Government accountable for service delivery on this critical matter.
