The adage of “where there’s smoke there’s fire” rings loud when it comes to Ace Magashule and his role in a number of matters that have maladministration and corruption written all over them.
Under Magashule’s watch, the Free State province has wallowed in a mire of mismanaged and corrupt use of government funds. The Auditor-General’s reports show the Free State bumbling from pillar to post as the country’s worst performing province, when it comes to the financial hygiene of state and municipal funds.
The fact that a warrant of arrest has been issued for Magashule, whose name has been linked to a number of questionable transactions and corrupt activity within his province, is extremely rewarding and positive news for civil society.
“We believe that Mr Magashule needs to face the music and answer to the allegations of corruption put to him,” says Stefanie Fick, executive director of OUTA’s Accountability Division. “Mr Magashule is one of the big fish when it comes to people being fingered in corruption and his arrest will instil confidence that the criminal justice system is working again.”
“We believe that the current and improving credibility of the NPA and the Hawks suggests that Ace must be seriously implicated, as we don’t believe they would be taking this course of action against Mr Magashule, if they didn’t have good reason to do so,” adds Fick. “We are also interested to see if the ANC will stick to their decision that those implicated in corruption should step aside.”
