Black Friday SABC protest necessary
“The SABC is behaving today, just as the apartheid Government did for decades, by censoring the broadcast of matters and issues as they really are,” says Wayne Duvenage, the Chairperson of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA). “Worst of all, they are shunning those within their ranks who dare to question decisions on serious matters. This behaviour bears the hallmarks of an autocratic entity who’s leadership needs to be challenged on the motive behind their decisions.”
The smoke and noise around the turmoil and activity at the SABC is thick and Government should take strict corrective action to restore the integrity of the SABC to being untainted and courageous in their coverage of all public interest issues.
There can be no stability or professional strategic outcomes that suit the best interests of the public, when a state broadcaster has ten CEO’s in seven years. Nor can there be when the organization suffers the loss of journalistic talent, such as that recently encountered.
Should the integrity and behaviour of the state broadcaster’s leadership continue in its current fashion, we believe the SABC will be inviting a public and business backlash of significant negative impact on their revenue stream.
