Drinking water quality monitoring project

Status: October 2018: Clean and Healthy – The water quality is clean and free from viruses.
Purpose: To ensure that all 700 000 Emfuleni residents have clean and healthy drinking water supplied to them by the municipality.

Background

More than 700 000 Emfuleni residents receive their drinking from the Rand Water which is distributed through the Emfuleni drinking water system.

The OUTA Emfuleni branch started this monthly initiative to be proactive in measuring the drinking water quality as to ensure the health of the community.

Given the local municipalities continued decline, we should leave nothing to chance and giving control back to the people by monitoring the drinking water independently. By enlisting water experts, the local community branch will not only test the water quality but will have a strong enough legal case to take on the local municipality if it supplies unhealthy water to its residents.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) recently conducted a social media survey, asking people in Gauteng whether they believed their drinking water is of good quality. Out of the 3000 votes we received within 24 hours, an alarming 83% of people said “NO”, saying that their drinking water is not clean.

OUTA is a proudly South African civil action organisation, that is purely crowd funded. Our work is supported by ordinary citizens who are passionate about holding government accountable and ensuring our taxes are used to the benefit of all South Africans.
