OUTA lauds Mogoeng’s calls for ethical leadership
“Chief Justice Mogoeng’s call comes at a pivotal time in our democratic country’s history. Over the past few years we have seen rampant corruption wherein a number of members of parliament and the cabinet have been implicated, including our former President,” said OUTA CEO, Wayne Duvenage.
The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) trusts that Mogoeng’s comments are being heard and taken seriously by the ruling party’s leadership and more so by President Cyril Ramaphosa, as he prepares to select his new cabinet.
South Africa has an opportunity to send the right signals to the local and international investment community and rating agencies, who are looking for signs of renewed moral courage and improved levels of ethical leadership that will turn the tide against corruption, which has ravaged the country over the past decade.
The organisation further endorses the Chief Justice’s call to rid the country of corruption by calling on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to start processing the many outstanding charges and complaints that have been laid against those involved in corruption and gross wrongdoing against the state and its people.
“We reiterate our past calls that input provided to the Zondo Commission should be processed soonest by the NPA, so that cases against abusers of our tax revenues can begin to be prosecuted,” says Duvenage. “Should more information become available during later stages of the commission, this evidence can be supplemented to charges laid against the perpetrators.”
