SANRAL cancels De Beers Pass Route construction plans

This R10bn road construction project aimed to shave only 14km off the current N3 route between Gauteng and Durban would have dealt a blow to the local economy of Harrismith.

We believe the scrapping of the De Beers Pass Route project was due to the active work of the Harrismith Business Chamber and other organisations like the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) who had shone the light on this most irrational plan. “OUTA commends SANRAL under its new leadership of Mr Skumbuzo Macazoma, who appears to have made this bold decision to scrap this expensive and unnecessary project. says Ben Theron, OUTA’s Portfolio Director for Transport.

OUTA believes that SANRAL’s Board and management team should seriously apply their minds in a similar manner to their plans to build a new greenfields N2 Wild Coast Toll road, which appears to have an equal, if not worse dilemma of irrationality and lack of meaningful engagement with the local communities.
