IS JOBURG’s TAP WATER TO BE TRUSTED? WaterCAN TESTED IT

WaterCAN, OUTA's water initiative, conducted thorough testing of public water points in the city after concerns about quality and resident health. Our team analysed samples from 12 taps, checking for contaminants like E.coli, nitrates, metals, and more. Here’s what we found.

WaterCAN has taken action to ensure the safety of Johannesburg's drinking water. Our first round of testing covered Cosmo City, Chartwell, Diepsloot, Morningside, Linbro Park, Lindhurst, Linksfield, Greenside, Linden, Bromhof, and Ruimsig.  The results are in: the water is clean! It's worth noting that these tests reflect the water's quality on the date of consumption.

WaterCAN is dedicated to advocating for safe, clean, and accessible drinking water for all residents of Johannesburg, and aims to test the water quality in every supply area. We encourage local community organisations such as ratepayers’ organisations, water organisations and citizen scientists to participate in this process. Monthly water testing will ensure safe access to clean drinking water to Johannesburg residents, and will assist WaterCAN with providing accurate and reliable data on the quality of drinking water in Johannesburg. This can go a long way in raising awareness, which will help safeguard our precious water resources while also timeously addressing potential issues to safeguard public health.

Your involvement can make a significant difference in protecting our precious water resources and public health. If you have concerns about your drinking water or want to participate in the initiative, please contact WaterCAN for more information. The test results can be found on WaterCAN’s Map My Water portal here.
