OUTA has been advocating for electoral reform, supporting the inclusion of independent candidates in national and provincial elections. We strongly believe that this will lead to greater accountability from elected officials, as they will be held responsible by the voters who elected them. Our involvement in the Electoral Reform Bill began in 2019 when we joined a Constitutional Court case calling for change. After the court ruled certain sections of the Electoral Act unconstitutional, OUTA submitted multiple recommendations to help finalise the Bill. The deadline for the Bill's finalisation was 28 February. National Assembly passed it on 23 February, but to our disappointment, all the reforms we advocated for, have not been included. We continue to monitor developments and will decide on future action once we know whether the President has signed it into law. Learn more about OUTA's push for electoral reform here.
