OUTA DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY: CHALLENGING NERSA’S SECRECY OVER KARPOWERSHIP GENERATION LICENCES
Don’t be fooled by empty promises. When politicians like Gwede Mantashe tout Karpowerships as the solution to end loadshedding, it’s best to take it with a scoop of salt – forget the pinch. OUTA has learned this lesson the hard way, having to bring another court application challenging the National Energy Regulator’s (NERSA) secrecy over awarding generation licences to Karpowership.
Why all the secrecy? If this is such a good deal, why not open up the applications for all to see? After all, it’ll be us, the consumers, who will have to foot the bill for an illogical 20-year deal that will only produce 1 220MW of electricity – barely enough to alleviate loadshedding by one stage.
OUTA is taking action and is calling for transparency. This latest court challenge is part of OUTA’s main application filed on 26 April 2022 which calls on the court to review and set aside NERSA’s decisions to award the generation licences.
