Get ready for a shake-up in your property taxes! The City of Johannesburg is finalising its 2023 general valuation roll, and this could mean big changes to the rates property owners are charged from 1 July 2023.

Keep an eye out for your formal notification (Section 49 notice) from the City which will show the updated municipal valuation for your properties in the General Valuation Roll (GVR) 2023. While single percentage increases can be expected, many property owners have been hit with unexpected unaffordable two to three digit percentage hikes in other municipalities. Don’t be caught off guard  –  if you feel that your property is unfairly assessed, you only have a three-week window to dispute the valuation and proposed rate with the City.
