COMMISSION FOR GENDER EQUALITY: OUTA JOINS CALLS FOR EXTENDING NOMINATIONS 

 

Functional and ethical Chapter 9 institutions are crucial for a constitutional democracy 

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) is a Chapter 9 institution, created in terms of our Constitution to safeguard our country’s democracy. OUTA has always been a fierce protector of the independence of Chapter 9 institutions. They should always be impartial and prepared to engage robustly in public interest. If this is not the case (like we have seen with the Office of the Public Protector) corruption and impunity prevails, while the public is left vulnerable and our taxes wasted.  Hence, when we were approached about the worrisome selection process of new commissioners for the CGE, OUTA wrote to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities to extend the deadline for public comment.
