CEO UPDATE
Dear supporter
Yesterday, the 6th of June, the ANC took a decision to form a Government of National Unity (GNU) for the 7th administration. We see this as a wise decision, given the vastly contrasting options available to the ANC when it comes to selecting coalition partners to form a new government.
This option will allow the various role-players to display their willingness to collaborate and participate in a co-operative government vehicle in what Ramaphosa terms as “the most viable, effective and powerful way to meet the expectations of all South Africans at this critical juncture.” He went on to say that “the purpose of this government of national unity must be first and foremost to tackle the pressing issues that South Africans want to be addressed.” We absolutely agree with this statement. However, what actually transpires will need to be meaningfully experienced by the people of our country.
It’s important to note that in reality, a GNU is nothing more than a coalition whereby all parties are invited. It is a “grand coalition”, so to speak, and that in itself will be a significant challenge. The journey forward will involve very tough and robust discussions to determine which parties will agree to enter a GNU, what the terms and conditions are and who within those parties will play which roles.
The next few days and weeks – maybe even months – that it will take to form a GNU, will be a true test of leaders’ abilities to set aside egos and their party-political agendas, and get on with the job that we expect of them.
Whatever happens, the debates and discussions to reach consensus on passing new laws, approving budgets and other important matters, should no longer be a one-sided affair. There is no doubt that this could also hamper many processes and delay important decisions. These are the teething pains of the significant development and maturing of our democracy.
A significant matter that cannot be ignored or left unattended, is swift and decisive action to deal with any unrest and illegal action by authorities, should this be required. This time the message from citizens to politicians is loud and clear: going forward, start placing the country and its citizens at the forefront of all your decisions on policy and matters affecting the country.
Coalitions or multi-party co-governance structures are our new reality, and we must accept this whilst dealing with the warts that come with it. The OUTA team, however, wants to assure the public and all our supporters that no matter what transpires, our team will continue to do its work in holding to account those who abuse their positions of power, regardless of the political landscape. We remain steadfast in our mission to ensure that public funds are used responsibly, and that corruption is rooted out.
We call on all South Africans to stay engaged and informed. Active participation in our democracy is more crucial now than ever before, and we will place pressure on Government to be more inclusive of society’s views and demands for greater transparency, accountability, and an equitable future for our nation.
