Despite the announcement of the end of e-tolls by the Minister of Finance six months ago, Gauteng freeway users are still receiving bills. Meanwhile, the outstanding bonds are causing a dispute between Treasury and Gauteng Province, leaving SANRAL in a difficult position. However, the organization has attempted to shift the blame for the annual shortfall of R15 billion to the non-payment of e-tolls. This despite the fact that e-tolls would only have contributed around R2 billion per year, if 90% of Gauteng road users paid theirs, something OUTA warned would never happen. It is time for government to end this scheme, and for SANRAL to be honest and tell taxpayers about the cost of maintaining the thousands of provincial roads that provinces couldn’t and transferred to SANRAL. Read more here.
