JOBURGCAN: SURVEY AND FEEDBACK
The recent resignation of Johannesburg's mayor demonstrates the power of collective civic action. Groups like JoburgCAN, along with communities and resident associations (RAs), played a key role in this achievement. What would you like us to do next? Please take our survey.
For months, communities and civil society organizations, including JoburgCAN and the Joburg Crisis Alliance, have voiced their concerns about the mayor’s handling of key municipal issues.
These persistent efforts, rooted in the belief that accountability is non-negotiable in governance, have succeeded in compelling the current coalition parties to take action.
This development is a testament to the strength of an engaged and organised citizenry. By uniting our voices and leveraging the tools of civic activism, we have sent a clear message: leaders must prioritize the needs of the people they serve or face the consequences of their inaction.
It is crucial to build on this as we move toward 2026. The departure of the mayor is not just a political event; it is a turning point for Johannesburg, signalling a new era of accountability and responsive governance. We hope that the incoming Mayor will engage with us and be willing to hold the current Municipal Manager accountable for poor performance.
JoburgCAN remains committed to driving change and holding public officials accountable. This victory reminds us of what we can achieve together and strengthens our resolve to continue advocating for a city that works for all its residents. Together, we are shaping a better future for Johannesburg.
