Gigaba Charges
OUTA has laid charges of treason, corruption, extortion, fraud and theft against Malusi Gigaba as former Minister of Home Affairs.
WHY IS OUTA TARGETING GIGABA AND HOME AFFAIRS?
Malusi Gigaba, now Minister of Finance, was Minister of Home Affairs when he apparently ordered the deployment of at least one Home Affairs official, Gideon Christians, to New Delhi in India. Christians had a cosy relationship with the Guptas, built up over years. Christians had previously been based in India on behalf of Home Affairs, when he provided a lot of help to the Guptas with visas for their connections. Christians had been transferred to Cape Town; Gigaba’s instruction to Home Affairs sent him back to India, even though the department didn’t have a post for him. Christians needed “Top Secret” security clearance for his new post and, when the department indicated this was an issue, he appealed to the Guptas for help.
WHAT IS OUTA DOING?
OUTA has laid charges of corruption and fraud against Gigaba, Christians and Gupta businessmen Ashu Chawla and Tony Gupta.
WHY IS THIS AGAINST THE LAW?
Christians helped the Guptas circumvent the law on immigration. Gigaba appears to have intervened to deploy him back to India, where he was apparently helpful to the Guptas. There are indications that Christians took favours from the Guptas.
