Drinking Water Quality
The lives of people depend on the sustainable provision of clean and healthy water.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has the responsibility to ensure that Water Services Institutions (WSI) provide clean and healthy drinking water.
These institutions (usually your municipality) must submit their water quality reports to DWS to fulfill its oversight function. Institutions that fail to provide the DWS information may be guilty of an offence and liable, on conviction, to a fine or to imprisonment or both.
OUTA believes that South Africans need to have access to transparent and accurate information regarding the quality of drinking water they receive from their local WSI.
DWS has developed an Integrated Regulator Information System (IRIS), which indicates the supplied drinking water quality as per the information supplied by the WSI.
OUTA created a Self Help Guide through our water expertise which allows you to view the quality of the drinking water in your area according to the DWS system.
