OUTArian OF THE MONTH

Fikile Dada has been with OUTA since 2018. Her sunny personality, positive attitude, and strong work ethic have already ensured she has been promoted twice. She currently works as a supporter relations agent in our call centre.

Why do you enjoy working for OUTA? It’s a friendly, warm working environment, with colleagues who have become like family over the years. But apart from that, I also believe our work matters. OUTA definitely makes a difference in South Africa.

What has been your favourite project so far? In July last year, the Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) – of which OUTA is a member – made a public call for the resignation of Councillor Kabelo Gwamanda, the Johannesburg’s mayor at the time. Frustrated residents and several civil society organisations took to the streets to demand the mayor resign. It was incredible to be part of the protest, and experience such a sense of solidarity. I believe we as citizens should hold authorities to account, and that a peaceful protest is an important way of making our voices heard.

What is your wish for our country? That one day very soon, we will have an accountable government. It’s not impossible if we can mobilise more people to become active citizens.

Why do you think people should support OUTA’s work?  Civil society organisations are the cornerstone of our democracy. OUTA works very hard to ensure that government use public funds responsibly, and we have achieved a lot over the last few years. Imagine how much more we can do if more people support us financially.
