THE BILL FOR MUNICIPAL FAILURE KEEPS LANDING ON RESIDENTS’ DOORSTEPS

 

Water outages. Electricity interruptions. Broken roads. Crumbling infrastructure.


Yet every year residents are expected to pay more.


In our submission on government’s proposed White Paper on Local Government, we argue that municipalities cannot continue shifting the cost of corruption, incompetence and poor decision-making onto communities through higher tariffs and fixed charges.


We have called for stronger accountability, professionalisation of local government, competency requirements for councillors and meaningful consequences for political interference and maladministration.


Residents cannot continue paying for failures they did not create.


If local government is to recover, accountability must become more than a slogan.
