Joburg Crisis Alliance responds to the resignation of Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda

The Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) acknowledges the resignation of Kabelo Gwamanda as the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg. While this development reflects the widespread pressure and discontent from Joburg residents and civil society, the JCA stresses that this is not a victory but rather a critical moment for renewed commitment to better governance in our city.

The JCA, along with its convening organisations—Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF), Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA), Action for Accountability (A4A), Defend Our Democracy (DOD), and Johannesburg Inner-City Partnership (JICP)—reiterates that our primary concern is the efficient and accountable leadership of Johannesburg, not the individuals occupying positions of power. We have consistently maintained that our campaign is not in favour any political party, and we will continue to hold all city leaders accountable, irrespective of their political affiliation.

The resignation of Mayor Gwamanda highlights the urgent need for a leadership that truly prioritises the needs and concerns of Johannesburg’s residents. The challenges we face—ranging from electricity outages to water shortages, service delivery failures, and corruption—require decisive action and resolution. This is what a change of leadership must address and resolve.

As the Council prepares to elect a new Executive Mayor, the JCA calls on all members of the Council to prioritise the interests of the city and its people. We will continue to advocate for transparent, responsive, and effective governance, and we will hold the incoming mayor to the same standards of accountability.

We also call a new approach to working with and collaborating with the people of Johannesburg and their organisations. The City on its own will never address the issues that confronts it today.

In 2023, we were in court challenging the Karpowership generation licences and SANRAL’s secrecy over toll profits. These cases continue.
We have also challenged electricity prices and we defend South Africa’s water resources.

We want to see South Africa’s tax revenue used for the benefit of all, not a greedy few.

Any amount welcome.
