COMMUNITIES: GET INVOLVED AND CHANGE YOURS

Do you want to change your town or suburb? We have resources to assist you. OUTA’s Community Action Network (CAN) division is launching several new initiatives to build networking opportunities and provide practical resources for communities.

According to CAN’s Project Manager, Jonathan Erasmus, key initiatives include rolling out the Community Network Directory.

“This directory will allow community organisations to register and be easily found by the public. It’s a powerful tool to connect community organizations with individuals,” said Erasmus.

Other tools include mechanisms to help communities monitor municipal transparency and enhance interaction between property owners and municipal valuation rolls.

“We are focused on creating resources that empower communities. The best form of activism is to strengthen communities to help themselves and hold local authorities accountable,” Erasmus added.

Due to high demand from communities across the country seeking guidance and intervention, CAN has decided to focus on building the capacity needed for self-help, rather than assisting every community directly.

“There are over 200 municipalities in South Africa, with several community groups active in each. We all know that the majority of our municipalities are in some form of distress. What we have learned over the years is that local governments respond to informed and sustained collective action,” Erasmus concluded.
