JOBURG CCTV BY-LAW REPEALED

 

After sustained public outcry and a looming legal challenge, the Johannesburg City Council has repealed its CCTV by-law. The regulations would have forced residents and businesses into costly compliance, undermined privacy, and offered no real benefit for public safety.


OUTA and SAPOA challenged the by-law as unconstitutional, warning that it handed the state power it had no right to claim. Council’s decision to repeal is not just a legal victory - it’s a reminder that citizens can stop government overreach when they organise and push back.
