HONOURING MORAL COURAGE: JEFF WICKS AND THE FIGHT FOR TRUTH

Few journalists have done more to expose corruption in South Africa’s health sector than News24’s Jeff Wicks. His investigation into Tembisa Hospital revealed how syndicates looted more than R2 billion meant for patients, and how whistleblower Babita Deokaran was silenced for trying to stop them.

Jeff recently spent an afternoon with OUTA’s team, where he spoke candidly with us about his four-year investigation - the slow, careful work of tracing money flows, unearthing fake companies, and confronting a system designed to protect itself.

He shared what it takes to keep pushing when the threats grow louder and justice moves slower than truth.

At the end of his talk, OUTA presented Jeff with our Moral Courage Certificate, recognising his integrity, bravery and commitment to public accountability.

“Investigative journalists like Jeff keep the light on when others would rather we look away,” says Wayne Duvenage. “His work honours Babita’s legacy - and reminds us all that courage is contagious.”
