Fuel prices: Why so high?

We are as worried as you over the constantly increasing price of fuel, as it has a major effect on the daily lives of all South Africans. OUTA’s CEO, Wayne Duvenage, unpacks why South Africa’s fuel price is skyrocketing.

While OUTA acknowledges the influence of the international price of oil, two important local contributing factors are the weak value of the rand – largely due to poor government economic policy and management of our fiscal affairs – and our government’s incessant desire to increase taxes on motorists through fuel-related levies.  OUTA maintains that the state has pushed the envelope on fuel levy increases too far and should seriously consider pulling back on seeking additional tax revenue. We are investigating ways in which we can put pressure on government to stop hiking fuel levies in 2022, and will keep you posted. Read more here.
