JUSTICE FOR BABITA: CORRUPTION IN PUBLIC HOSPITALS HAS DEADLY CONSEQUENCES

The Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) interim report confirms what whistleblower Babita Deokaran tried to stop - a hospital turned into a crime scene.

Nine syndicates and over 200 front companies siphoned more than R2 billion from Tembisa Hospital, enough to fund its operations for an entire year.

Instead of treating patients, officials and suppliers treated public funds as their own.

The Gauteng Department of Health failed to act, allowing the looting to continue long after Babita was assassinated for sounding the alarm.

OUTA is calling for:

• Immediate suspension and prosecution of all implicated officials

• Blacklisting of the companies and directors involved

• Full recovery of stolen assets and funds

• An independent audit of all 37 Gauteng hospitals

“This is what happens when oversight collapses and whistleblowers are left unprotected,” says OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage.

“Babita’s bravery must not have been in vain - this report is the start, not the end, of accountability.”

OUTA will continue monitoring this case and pushing for reform in how hospital procurement is managed, ensuring that public healthcare serves citizens - not syndicates.
